Bychkov’s recordings of all Mahler’s symphonies are regarded by many critics as the Mahler cycle of the 21st century. . . [an] uncompromisingly high-quality complete recording.

Czech Philharmonic & Semyon Bychkov present Symphony No. 9 in D minor (1909), a work that stands as one of Mahler’s most profound and searching final statements. Cast in the same key as his First Symphony, it suggests a return to origins, yet the music moves inexorably forward, shaped by a heightened sense of finality and reflection.
The first movement unfolds as a remarkable ‘liquidation of sonata form’, followed by a nostalgic Ländler and a restless, turbulent Rondo-Burleske ‘bereft of laughter’. What emerges is a deeply human work – at once intimate and vast – culminating in a slow movement of extraordinary stillness. Here, the music dissolves into D flat major before arriving at a final state of existential quiet, a conclusion that resists resolution yet leaves an indelible impression.
