Dvořák: In Blessed Bliss
Antonín Dvořák based his Othello Overture on Shakespeare’s drama of the same name. For the setting, the composer remained close to the action and drew on the model of Franz Liszt’s symphonic poem. Dvořák wrote stage directions into the original score, so to speak. For example, with the words “They embraced each other in blissful delight”, he connected opposing themes that can easily be attributed to Desdemona and Othello. And again and again echoes of works by Liszt and Richard Wagner flare up – such as the “Fire Magic” from Wagner’s “Valkyrie”.
Schubert: Powerfully luminous
Antonín Dvořák was also considered a proven admirer of Schubert’s early symphonies. In them, the Czech already thought he recognized the composer’s later individual style. Franz Schubert wrote Symphony No. 2 at the age of 17 and with it elevated Beethoven to the ideal. Like the symphonies of the Titan, Schubert’s music also pushes forward with powerful luminosity, full of energy and zest for action – and yet retains a Mozartian lightness and playfulness.
